Basic Carpentry Skills for Building Greenhouse Constructions

Do you have a greenhouse on your property? A number of people are interested in not only having one, but building a greenhouse for their homes. You will need some basic and some advanced carpentry skills in order to build a greenhouse for your home.

Most of the time, a greenhouse will have a wooden floor. These floors can be pretty easy to construct, using 2’x 4” pieces or 1’x 6” pieces that will make a grid that will sit on the ground flat. You can space the boards a half-inch apart to help with drainage, but you might want to have a concrete slab underneath to prevent weeds. If not, you can always get rid of the weeds with a commercial spray weed control. You can probably make a great greenhouse floor in roughly a day or so.

After the floor is done, you will need to have a few more skills to get the walls up. The greenhouse can look really easy, but it’s a little bit tougher than it looks. You will need to build the wall perpendicular to the floor with laser levels, but you will have to also make sure that there is the right amount of bracing on the walls as well. You will need to make sure you are using the right design and the right materials throughout your construction project.

One way to develop your plan more accurately is to look into greenhouse plans or go by a house and study the way it’s being built in construction. You will be able to apply the same construction rules to your greenhouse. You will need either the usual 2’ x 4” wooden slabs or a big number of the L-braces.

Once you have your greenhouse built, or at least have the plans for it, you can start planning the fun parts. You get to move onto the furniture planning part of your greenhouse preparation.

If you have a moderate-to-large sized greenhouse, you will need to have a good tabletop for space. There are a number of tabletop sizes that are available direct for purchase, which can be a very agreeable solution for many. If you are an active do-it-yourselfer, you can make a tabletop style and size of your own.

Draw out the design that you want and that will look good in your space. You can create a customized design before you even start pulling out your hammer and nails. You can find wood pieces that are 4’ x 4” that will make excellent wooden legs, for example. You will most likely want a flat top on the legs, so be sure that your cut is a clean, perpendicular cut to avoid any table wobbling. You can use some L-braces to increase the support of the table top itself.

After you build a tabletop, you can make benches to sit on or for your plants to sit on as well. You can find also make some simple or more ornate and complicated shelves, depending on the flowers you want to grow and how you want them arranged.
