Build Your Own Greenhouse – Foundation is Important
Just like anything else, it’s good to have a solid foundation if you build your own greenhouse. Fortunately for you, there are a lot of different choices you can have with it comes to a good foundation. Sometimes, owners will just lie the pre-made greenhouse on top of whatever ground existed in the location beforehand. That could be grass, dirt or gravel. Sometimes, the premade greenhouse will come with a floor, so that will solve the problem entirely.
If you are going to build your own greenhouse, you can prepare the ground underneath for a customized solution. You can simply smooth the earth under where the greenhouse will go and then lie railroad ties about an inch apart. You can also set up a simple platform of 2’ x 4”’s or other wooden pieces to have a solid base and viable drainage system.
With a simple design like this, you can control weeds easily and replace the wooden boards whenever you need to. This will also help to reduce mold and mildew, which can be slippery when it accumulates on the wooden floors.
You can also lay a cement foundation on your floor, similar to what is under many houses. It sounds easy, but it can take a lot of effort and end up being more difficult that other alternatives. Once it is down, however, you can cover it with linoleum or tile.
In order to have a cement foundation, you will need to lay out the area, smooth it and build in a temporary container to ensure that the cement stays where you need it to be when you pour it. You will want it to be smooth and level, which can take a lot of time and patience if you don’t already have a lot of experience smoothing cement down.
After you pour it, you will be left with a foundation that will be pretty difficult to move afterwards, so make sure the location you choose you are 100% certain about.
A cement foundation will last a long time, however, and will help you out when it comes to heating and temperature control. You can put tiles or other flooring supplies on top of a heating system, for example. You can easily take care of your cement floor as well and it is very sturdy. You can easily clean it with a few broom strokes, while gravel can be much more cumbersome to clean. They will also absorb a lot of heat, which can be great in the wintertime and for your plants in general.
It will probably require a few weekends for you to build a good cement foundation. You will need an array of good materials, tools and of course, construction plans to ensure you are doing it the right way. You can find almost everything you need at the hardware store, or if you order it online and have it delivered to you.
When building your own greenhouse, make sure you plan ahead and that the floor is sturdy enough to support your benches, tabletops, pots and more. I’m sure that you will enjoy this flooring method for your new greenhouse.
