Herb Gardening Plants - Indoor Herbs vs. Outdoor Herbs
With herbs being hardy plants, it is surprising to learn that there is a large amount of those who thrive in an outdoor setting versus those who do better in an indoor environment. However, there are several varieties that will perform beautifully in either situation provided they are given the proper care.
Herbs are by far the easiest type of plant to grow. These hardy plants adapt well to soil that would be considered poor for any other type of plant and they require virtually no fertilization as well as being drought resistant. These wonders of nature are also close to perfection as they will return year after year hardier than the last. These factors make the decision for selecting the perfect choice very simple whether you want to plant them in the landscape or place them in a pot for home or deck décor.
One herb that thrives in both indoor and outdoor settings is the Bay Laurel plant. This fine herb is originally from the Mediterranean and loves lots of sunshine in combination with dry conditions. However, this herb is equally happy to be planted in a container, the trick is making sure that the pot has sufficient draining capabilities and that the container is placed in an area where it can receive optimum sunlight.
To plant your Bay Laurel in a container, you must fist ensure that the container you have selected is large enough to prevent the plant from becoming root bound. Next, simply fill the pot with pre-moistened soil. After planting, make sure to place the container in an area that receives six hours or more of optimum sunlight, then sit back and watch how massive this beautiful plant becomes within only one years time.
While Chives are able to be grown in a container, this plant really thrives when placed in a landscape garden. As this plant soaks up the soils nutrients and the life giving heat, it can grow to be one foot or more in height. The Chive plant produces beautiful purple flowers and makes for a colorful addition to any outside garden. This particular variety of herb grows very well in bunches and has the ability to withstand winter’s unforgiving chill. Chive will come back year after year more beautiful and hardier than the last.
The Parsley plant is one variety that thrives much better in an indoor setting. Although it will survive outside, it more than likely will only last for one season due to the cool winter climate. However, a plant kept in a container indoors will last for years and years with the proper love and care. This plant is particularly difficult to grow from seed form, so finding a good plant cutting to start with will work the best.
Parsley plants grow by getting new leaves in the center of the plant. It is important to trim the outer leaves first, in order to ensure a healthy, thriving plant. This herb variety is another sun loving plant, so makes sure to place it in an area that receives endless amounts of brilliant sunlight.
The wonderful and elegant Lavender plant thrives in an outside landscape. Used as a fabulous ground cover, its pink and purple flowers bring a splash of color to any environment. If you wish to enjoy the fragrant scent of Lavender indoors, a proper drying method makes this plant a perfect addition to potpourri or perfumed sachets.
The Lavender plant is one of the easiest plants to care for. All that is required is lots of brilliant sunlight and to ensure that the ground is well drained, there is no need for pruning, fertilizing or any other extra care. Another aspect of this plant that makes it so popular is that it is insect and deer repellant so there will be no need to take extra precautions in those areas either.
Herb plants are highly versatile when it comes to indoor and outdoor settings and they are also one of the simplest plants to grow. Each and every variety makes for a beautiful and aromatic addition to anyone’s garden or home.
