How to Choose a Home Remodeling Contractor

Just like any other profession, there are good home remodeling contractors, and some that should be avoided at all costs.

Some contractors make a far better living than others, and there is good reason for this. Most successful contractors have spent many years as a workman themselves. This experience gives them the skill and knowledge they need to do a job correctly.

These contractors have learned, over the years, to appreciate the time and hard work it takes to become a skilled workman. They have also developed a keen eye for whether a job is done correctly or not. During that time, they have also gained some business skills as well.

Although they may not be schooled in certain aspects of business, such as accounting and finance, they do know what kind of people to hire. They will work well with employees and sub-contractors, as well as treating customers fairly when it comes to job bidding.

These are the things you should be looking for in a home remodeling contractor. It’s not as difficult as it sounds if you start your search knowing what to look for and what to avoid.

Considering the amount of money you’re probably about to spend, don’t be afraid to ask for references. The reaction you get when you ask will tell you a lot. Good contractors are more than willing to put you in touch with former clients. Referrals constitute a large portion of their business.

More important than asking for references is actually checking them. Make sure you ask questions about things such as budget and schedule, and if the contractor was able to meet them. Most people will readily share their experiences with you, good or bad.

The reference they give is as important to them as it is to you. If they were pleased with their work and tell people about it, then the contractor will most likely be around next time they need him.

There are licensed and unlicensed home remodeling contractors out there. Being unlicensed does not mean they are unskilled. You are taking a risk, though, by hiring one, especially if you do not know them or someone they did work for.

If you’re working with a licensed contractor, ask for the license number. Take the time to check with business organizations, such as the Better Business Bureau, to see if you’re dealing with a reputable outfit. Do whatever you can to find out if they have any complaints or legal action pending against them.

You may, however, not be granted access to all information pertaining to legal action as it is sometimes protected by law.

Even though you are dealing with a skilled professional, you should ask many questions. Remember, you are basically going to be their employer, and should find out all you can about time, budget and previous work details.

Get as much specific information as you can about your particular job. There’s a big difference between room remodeling and room addition. A deck that is eight feet high built on a steep slope is much more difficult than an 8ft x 10ft deck built off the back of your house on flat ground.

When interviewing contractors, you’ll need to pay attention to the way they answer your questions. Avoid people that seem to sidestep your questions or make excuses for previous job failures. Also, stay away from someone who will not look you in the eye and answer your questions directly.

A good home remodeling contractor will be honest, and not promise you things that they cannot deliver. They will also take full responsibility for the results they provide, whether they are good or bad.
