Garden Landscaping Design and Planning Ideas
Landscaping is done to enhance visual appearance or to serve a specific purpose. Learning
the basics can help you design a scene that is both attractive and functional. Dividing the area
into ’activity zones’ is the first step a professional landscaper would take.
An area that will serve one certain purpose is called an activity zone. Examples would be
gardens, yards, patios, walkways, ponds and sheds. If you plan to include more than one of
these or some other type, it’s important to consider how they will look in relation to each other
to enhance the overall look of your design.
Take the time to sketch your ideas or utilize landscaping software. This will allow you to
make sure all of your activity zones fit together well and create an attractive and useful overall
picture.
Consider which flowers will grow and look the best in each particular zone. Figure out if
something like a step garden with multiple levels would be appropriate for a certain zone. These
types of gardens are good for a rectangular area that comes off of a wall of your house or a
porch. If your zone is visible from all angles, you may want to consider a circular garden.
If the zone you are planning is for a shed or patio, you need to plan on being able to level
the area. Walkways will also need to be leveled, unless the zone calls for it to be stepped.
Whether it’s on paper or on the computer, take the time to experiment and be creative,
considering many different layouts. You may be considering fruit trees or possibly trees to
create shade for sitting.
If your plans include planting trees, you’ll want to do your homework and research proper
pruning techniques. This will help you keep your trees healthy and your family and home safe
from dead branches falling and blowing around. In order to manage your garden properly, you’ll
need to know which times of year are best for transplanting shrubs and flowers.
Fencing is a good thing to consider if you have pets or small children. Sometimes fencing is
used for no other purpose than to create a certain look in an area. Fencing is available in a
variety of styles. Anything from standard chain link to something more decorative, such as
wrought iron, redwood or brick.
Different types of gardens require different types and amounts of maintenance after they
are completed. Consider how much time and effort you are willing to put into it when deciding
what type of garden you want. Some plants and flowers will live their entire lives during one
year and will need to replanted annually. Obviously, these are the plants we know as annuals.
If you don’t want to do the work year after year, then these plants aren’t for you.
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing plants is how much shade or
sunlight that particular area gets. Also, the amount of rainwater the area will receive should be
considered. Some plants will do better in sunlight, where others are more suited for being in
shady, moist areas.
Another deciding factor will be what area and climate you live in. Different geographic
locations have different growing seasons than others. This also narrows down what types of
trees you should use for your project. Some trees may not grow as well in your area as they do
in others.
The nice thing about landscaping is that you don’t have to be a professional to have a
great looking scene. You can start out very basic and change or add to it as time goes by.
After some trial and error, you should begin to see your landscaping skills blossom.
