Landscaping Around Trees - How to Choose the Right Trees

No matter what geographic location you live in, you should be able to find a wide variety of trees to use for your project.

Some popular choices for the Northeast include hemlock, spruce and cedar trees. Hemlocks have loose thin foliage that is quite attractive. Spruce trees create a lovely ’Christmas tree’ look with their green and gray needles. Cedars make excellent shade trees with their thick green foliage.

People travel from all over the country to view the beautiful foliage of the maple trees in the New England area. These trees come in several different varieties and are quite easy to care for. If you’re not a big fan of raking leaves, though, you should probably avoid planting this type of tree.

If you live in California, you’ll find numerous species that are native to the area. Various eucalyptus, pine and oak species are indigenous to the southern California region. Redwood, fir and various pine trees are more common in the northern end of the state. To increase your chances of raising healthy trees, be careful to choose a species that is natural in your particular area. They will be able to withstand certain pest and fungus problems and are easier to care for.

Fruit trees are a great addition to any landscaping project. As with other trees, you’ll want to find the species that work best in your particular region.

Northern Idaho and Washington are well known for their thriving apple trees. Citrus trees, such as lemon and orange, are usually associated with the sunny states of Florida and California. Many people think of Georgia when they think of peaches, but they can be found in California also.

Virginia, Missouri and Washington are the best places to plant cherry trees. The pink-white flowers of these trees are quite popular, as well as the fruit they bear.

Make sure you learn a few tips and techniques for pruning, as most trees will require it at some point.

Pruning is very important if your trees are in close proximity to your house or any other structure. This will reduce the risk of fire and wind-blown branches damaging your home. Fruit trees also require regular pruning to keep them productive.

Most evergreen species, such as pine and cedar trees will require pruning to allow sitting and walking under them. Witches broom is a common problem with tamarack trees. This is caused by a fungus and will spread all over the tree unless infected branches are removed.

Research the watering and fertilizing requirements for whatever tree you choose. Some trees require much water, such as cherry and apple, whereas hemlock and pine trees will find sufficient water in the ground. Certain trees are more likely to have insect problems and may need sprayed or pruned more often.
