Lawn Care Tools – How to Choose a Good Pair of Shears
One of the most versatile tools you can get for your lawn or garden is shears. Similar to garden scissors, they can make life easier for anyone working out in the lawn. Ordinary scissors work by holding material between two hard edges. You can modify this scheme by using a tool called “bypass shears.”
Blades are designed to bypass each other. This tool applies a shearing force between the two cutting edges as they glide past one another. There are at least a dozen different styles of bypass shears that you can find and use.
The biggest type of shears are called grass or hedge shears. These shears have long handles and can provide the maximum amount of material in one camp with a long cutting surface. They are similar to heavy duty scissors that are about 8” total in length with rubberized handles for easy gripping.
Pruning shears have two moon-shaped blades. One of the blades will have a convex and the other one has a concave. There will be large handles and the blade structure will allow for a large force that is needed for small wooden branches, trees, etc. You can also find pruning shears that are circular, saw tooth styled blades that are great for cutting even larger branches.
Long blades or pruning shears will often come with spring-and-latch mechanisms that will help you cut branches and more. You can see the spring separate the blade when you apply pressure to the handles, which is a safety feature that works out well. From there, the latch will be present to help clamp the blades shut when they are being stored. It also makes them quite handy to hang on a hook.
Garden scissors and shears are often confused for one another, but garden scissors have large open handles with short blades. They are only used for opening packages, cutting twine, cutting weed cloth and other small garden tasks. You can also use house scissors in the same capacity, but your garden scissors will be stronger and have higher durability to last longer. They also have blades that sharpen well.
No matter what, make sure you get a great pair of tools for your garden or lawn. A good pair of shears should be properly maintained. If you take good care of them, you will be able to use them for about 20 years, if not more. You will need to make sure that your shears have a number of essential qualities, including forged steel, an adjustable screw for tightening the loose blades and either rubberized grips or high-quality plastic to give you a good grip on your tool.
Make sure you buy something that is made with quality items in order to have it for years to come or else you will find yourself going out to buy a new pair of shears sooner than you might have wanted! Buy quality tools for your lawn and garden now and you are sure to enjoy them for years to come in the future.
