DIY Deck Lighting Guide – How to Light Your Decks Ideas

Many people choose to hide their decks behind a single porch light. There is so much more you can do with your deck lighting. Lighting is a great way to accent the best features of your deck.

There are a number of ways you can add lighting to your deck, including accent lights, post lights, or recessed lighting for illuminating the entire area.

As their name suggests, post lights are simply lights that are on a post. However, there are numerous designs and styles available. Some posts have the lamp inside a decorative housing at the top of the post. Other styles of post lights actually have the lamps embedded into the post, either on the side or the top. Other posts allow a means to simply attach some type of light to it. This gives you the option of selecting any type of lighting you wish.

Recessed lights would probably remind you of the type of lighting you would see in a movie theater. These lights can be placed almost anywhere, whether it be in the posts, as earlier stated, or actually embedded into a certain portion of the deck itself. A popular layout is for the entire deck to be outlined with these lights. This gives the area plenty of illumination, and adds to the look as well.

You can also use several different methods to provide ambient lighting to the entire area as well. Even things that have been around forever, such as wall sconces and lamps, can be used to add a stylish and decorative look to enhance the entire deck.

There's a wide variety of decorative wall lamps to choose from. You can find almost anything you can imagine, from Victorian designs to Disney characters. You should have no trouble finding a design or style to match your preferences or decoration scheme.

Whereas other lights are designed to bring focus to certain areas of your deck, accent lights are intended to create the style themselves. Many of these are designed with decorative covers that are quite attractive, but the goal of this type of lamp is to let the light create the look, not be the center of attention themselves.

You can use lighting similar to that which is used indoors. The type that indirectly accents a wall or a corner of a room. They can also add a nice compliment to some other objects as well. Your deck may have certain features that you wish to accent with the use of such lighting. It may be the color or stain of the deck or you may want to bring attention to various design aspects of the structure.

You may choose to incorporate one or all of these lighting designs into your deck. Whatever you choose, the key to creating an attractive look is to be consistent throughout the design. Take some time to look at pictures or drive around and check out what other people have done before making your choices.
