DIY Lighting Options - Lighting the Home Entertainment Area

Home entertainment has become such a priority that most homes now have a dedicated area, or separate room for this purpose. Many people have elaborate home theater and stereo systems. It can be quite a challenge to light this area properly.

If the home theater lighting scheme is done right, it will enhance the picture and the viewing experience. Obviously, the first thing you want to do is avoid any kind of glare on the television screen. One would think that putting the lights behind the television would eliminate this problem, but then the light will possibly shine in the viewer's eyes.

There are several ways to combat this problem.

One popular method for this application is track lighting. Light can be reflected into the room by a row of focused light pointing at the wall. This will give adequate light to the room, but not the intense focused light that might create glare on the screen. When it comes to track lighting, there are hundreds of styles and options to choose from. Placing and installing them is important for a number of reasons, though.

Heat can be an issue when using high wattage incandescent bulbs. Not only can this heat affect the actual light fixture itself, it can also cause paint to dry out. This will cause your walls to become discolored and peel. One way to avoid this is with halogen bulbs on a dimmer switch. However, if the lights are left on for long periods of time, you could run into the same problem.

LEDs are a good alternative. Each bulb will consume very little energy, compared to other types, and they will also provide the proper illumination. You will have to pay more initially for these, but you will probably never have to replace them. Many of these bulbs are designed to last more than ten years. This, combined with the low power consumption, will actually save you money over time.

Another important factor for home entertainment lighting is the use of accent lighting. This is how you will create the movie theater look that people love so much.

It might be helpful to go and check out how they do this in an actual movie theater. You'll notice that they create that atmosphere by using a mixture of dull and elegant lighting fixtures.

You can even enhance the look of your actual entertainment equipment. Many times these systems are made into beautiful pieces of furniture that cost thousands of dollars. Why not show it off with the correct lighting scheme?

Accent lights should always be directed away from the eyes, and onto the object you're trying to draw attention to. For a more dramatic look, you can create shadows by directing the light away from the object. Accent lighting should never take the attention away from the intended object or get in the way of the controls. You want your system to be the center of attention, not the light.

The proper lighting in the home entertainment area can serve as both practical and decorative, creating the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a show with friends and family.
