How to Develop a Photographic Memory

Have you ever been envious after watching someone look at something once, then seen them recall the details with no effort? If a photographic memory is not an ability you currently have, it is possible to train yourself to improve your memory.

The term photographic memory is a little misleading, as most people with the ability to recall details do not actually see a photographic image when they remember information. Many neurologists believe that eidetic memory is not something many people possess, but agree that it is possible to improve your memory.

Photographic memory – the ability to recall details – is often confused with eidetic memory – where a person views an image and can later recall the image, down to the tiniest details. Eidetic memory is a largely unconfirmed skill, but it has been proven that people can improve their photographic memory so that they can recall details easily after seeing things only once.

You can enhance your memory, thereby developing a photographic memory, with exercises that help to train your memory. These skills will be beneficial throughout your lifetime, from school through to your professional and personal life. Once your memory is trained to do so, recalling information, numbers, addresses and more, becomes simple.

At school, children are taught by repetition and then association. They learn to look at things and associate them with something that they can easily remember. When specific words are required to be memorized, they are often taught to put the words in story form so that they are easier to recall. This type of exercise helps to develop photographic memory, and can be used with any words or information that needs to be remembered.

Many people find numbers extremely difficult to remember, so a photographic memory is especially useful here. Using memory exercises, people can learn to recall numbers by association. This doesn’t mean that they see an image of the numbers, but rather they have related the numbers to something that they can easily remember.

Eidetic memory continues to be an area of contention, and many believe that this skill does not exist. Photographic memory, however, exists, and can be enhanced by using simple memory exercises. As individuals, everyone will find that different techniques work with varying success. Finding the best method/s will lead to a faster improvement of their memory capabilities.
