Memory Improvement Training Techniques
Many people have felt it – that niggling feeling in the back of your mind that you’ve forgotten something. You get home, walk inside and find your child sitting eagerly on the couch, waiting for you to get home so that they can open their birthday present – the present that you were meant to pick up from the store.
As you look at your child, you realize that it’s the third year in a row that you have forgotten their birthday. If this sounds like a common situation, then it’s time for you to begin some memory improvement training techniques. A few, simple methods will help you to improve your memory, and stop you from forgetting important details or events again.
Your memory is made up of several different categories: dates and events, names and faces, factual information and lists. Memory improvement can occur in each of the memory areas by utilizing various methods, all of which are relative simple exercises.
Many people often find it difficult to remember names, but there are several different methods that you can use to overcome this. A commonly used technique is to repeat the name and then associate a rhyme, or funny word, with the person’s name. Next time you’re out with friends, you might get introduced to someone named Matt. Begin by repeating the name once or twice in general conversation to help ingrain the name in your short term memory. A simple “Great to meet you Matt,” will do the trick.
The way to move it from your short term memory to your long term memory is to associate the name with a simple rhyme, like Matt the rat. To solidly ingrain the information, repeat to yourself whenever you see the person throughout the night “Matt the rat,” and associate an actual image of a rat with the person. This will almost guarantee that you won’t ever forget their name. Memory improvement isn’t difficult, you just need to know the correct techniques to use.
Another good memory improvement training technique is to use the rhyme with their appearance so that you are able to easily recognize them if you meet them again in the future.
When trying to remember lists, a good memory improvement method is to use a the items in a sentence, or make the first letters of the items into another word. This will help you to remember list items without having to write them down. If you had 5 items, you could do the following.
Ham
Water
Ice Cream
Eggs
Toilet paper
When you look at the list, it can be arranged like this
W ater
H am
I ce cream
T oilet paper
E ggs
By remembering the word White, you can use this to recall the amount of items and the first letters of each of the items. Your memory is easily able to recall the list items when you repeat W H I T E when you get to the supermarket.
Using these memory improvement tools will have you recalling details you thought you would never be able to. All it takes is a little time, effort and practice.
