Simple Useful Techniques to Improving Your Memory Skills

Toning your body is the same as improving your memory. To achieve either, you need to exercise. By not exercising your memory, you will find that over time, it will begin to stagnate, then deteriorate.

Most people don’t realize that the brain is similar to the muscles that make up your body, and that in order to remain healthy, it needs to be exercised regularly. To maintain or improve your memory skills, try some of the following.

Read, Write, and Think
Writing things down is a great way to begin improving your memory memory skills. A simple to do list, or writing extensive notes helps to actively engage your mind, something that passive listening doesn’t achieve. Even paying close attention when listening doesn’t stimulate the brain as much as writing does.

Read slowly. Just because you can read quickly doesn’t mean you should. Rushing through the material doesn’t give you adequate time to process the details in the text. By improving your understanding of a text, you will automatically improve your memory skills. As you practice this, you will find that you can begin to speed your reading up and still remember the details, but begin slowly. Reading, like writing, helps to stimulate your mind, which will help you to remember details.

Reflecting daily on what you’ve learnt is another good way to improve your memory skills. By reviewing things, you can help move the information you have processed that day into your long term memory. Reading over your notes, and paraphrasing them out loud is a great way to ensure the information is retained in your brain.

If these methods don’t appeal, or don’t work for you, then seek out other types of exercises. There are websites, books and audio and video tapes available which deal with improving your memory. The activities suggested are usually fun and versatile, and can help to ensure that you don’t begin to feel that the memory exercises you are practicing are monotonous and boring.

Everyone learns in a slightly unique way, so it is up to you to find the best technique for yourself. Just because it works for someone else doesn’t mean that you have to use it, so if something doesn’t work for you, move on. Improving your memory skills needs to be treated exactly like an exercise program – it needs to be customized to suit you and your goals.
