Home Plumbing Repair - Toilet Plumbing Problems

There are numerous home plumbing repair that may be become necessary when it comes to toilet plumbing problems. Fortunately, whether it's a broken flush handle or a complete replacement, all of them can be done by any do-it-yourselfer.

A good indication that the there is toilet plumbing problems would be water leaking around the base. It may be just a problem with the wax or grease sealant under the toilet, but unfortunately, it's just as much work to replace. The wax ring will sometimes tear and the grease sealant will dry up and begin to leak. These repairs still require you to remove the toilet to repair it.

Other Common Toilet Plumbing Problems
There are a few things that could lead to the toilet continuously running. One possible cause would be the plastic float ball inside the tank. If this float is not allowed to rise far enough, the water valve will not shut off and the toilet will continue to run.

You can check this by lifting up on the rod that the float is attached to. The water should shut off as soon as you do this. If this is the case, you can simply bend the rod until the float is able to rise enough to shut off the valve.

More often than not, this toilet plumbing problem is caused by the hole in the bottom of the tank not being sealed up by the rubber stopper. As water continues to leak out of that hole, the float ball is never allowed to rise high enough to shut off the water valve.

Sometimes this is due to a buildup of slime and debris on the bottom of the stopper. This can be cleaned off with a rough sponge or some steel wool. This may allow the stopper to seat properly on the hole and prevent the flow of water through it.

It may be that the stopper does not function properly due to it being broken or defective. Also, the hinges holding the stopper to the tank may become rusted and break over time. If this happens, there are kits you can purchase relatively cheaply that will take care of this problem.

The rod that is connected to the flush handle may also become corroded and break over a long period of time. If it's made of plastic, it can also break from years of repeated use. This is also an easy home plumbing repair that can be done by anyone. Just disconnect the chain that is attached to one end of the rod and disconnect the other end by loosening the nuts holding it to the flush handle.

If other parts fail, such as the float ball or water feed tubes, you can easily obtain kits that have all of these parts in them. This home plumbing repair and installation is usually pretty simple if you follow the instructions on the packages.
