Plumbing Clog Drains Tips

The number of methods for unclogging drains is no less than the number of things that can clog those drains. Many methods are needed because clogged drains can lead to a number of more serious problems. These problems include, burst pipes, foul odors, messes, and they prevent you from using certain facilities when the drain is not functional.

The simplest and least expensive method for unclogging drains is to simply run hot water into the drain. Some materials can be cleared with this method, including grease, small food particles, and other soft materials. Many of these substances can be partially dissolved, allowing the water to begin flowing again. The increased water pressure will often force the rest of the debris down the drain.

For a drain that is completely clogged, you'll have to try another method. Many of which are just as easy and inexpensive.

One of the most useful tools for unclogging pipes is the good old plunger. The material that is clogging the pipe may be forced through by the additional pressure going into the pipe. Caution should be used during the winter months. If ice blockage is the reason for the clog, the added pressure may actually burst the pipe.

It may be necessary to remove the U-shaped section of the pipe if that is where the problem is. If you loosen the two metal or plastic retaining nuts, you can easily remove that portion of the pipe and remove the blockage. Many times, thing such as earrings, spoons and other items will be dropped into the sink, causing it to become plugged.

Replace the pipe properly, the same way you took it off. Do not use any type of adhesive, such as plumber's putty or PVC glue. Teflon plumber's tape should be used on threaded connections. Be careful which way you wind it on, so that the tape stretches and compresses. If it goes the other way, it will loosen and water will leak eventually.

If you follow the directions, chemical drain openers are an effective choice for unclogging drains. Many common blockages can be dissolved using this method, allowing the water to begin flowing freely. The hot water that follows, will degrade it quickly, making it safe for the environment. This is usually safe for use with all types of pipes.

Simple clogs caused by calcium carbonate can easily be cleared with a homemade batch of baking soda and vinegar. More severe blockages may require some type of commercial products.

Larger blockages can be cleared with a plumber's snake. This is great for severe toilet clogs that a plunger will not fix. Other areas can also be cleared if all methods have proven unsuccessful.

If you're considering calling in a plumber, try using the snake yourself first. This is the method a professional will use first anyway. Shove the cable as far as it will go into the drain and begin turning the handle. Many times this will hook onto whatever is causing the clog. Then you can just pull it out.

If large items, such as clothing or sponges have fallen into the drain, this will often pull them out. It will also grind away smaller items that may have been causing the clog. Some models have metal fingers that will grab items that are stuck in the drain.

If all of these methods fail, it may be time to call a professional.
