Basic Rose Gardening Tools Intro
If you have the right tools, you are sure to get the job done easier and more efficiently. Before you head out to your rose garden, make sure that you have all of the right rose tools that you need, from the basic rose gardening tools to the specialized ones you will need for specific projects.
Pruners
A good pruner is a wonderful addition to any garden. There are two different types of pruners that you can buy. The first one is called an anvil pruner, while the other is known as the bypass pruner. The anvil pruner has the blades meeting on top of one another, while the bypass pruner’s blades will pass each other similar to scissors. You should use bypass pruners to avoid crushing your canes and stems.
Loppers
When your garden becomes mature, you will need loppers to cut back the old, thicker cane that are too big for mere pruners. You won’t need this tool for a few years with your rose garden.
Long Handled Shovel
Get a good shovel to ensure the job gets done correctly. You can buy a lightweight shovel with a strong handle. Shovels that have a fiberglass throat are a great choice. Spend a few extra dollars and get one with a padded handle to help reduce blisters and help your hands each year.
Wheelbarrow
You need a real wheelbarrow. Those cute garden carts really don’t help as much as they look great. You will need to have a strong tool to haul material and things from one place in your garden to another. You will be very glad you have a real wheelbarrow to help you when you have heavy things to move.
Gloves
You need to have a good pair of gloves when you are working in a rose garden. There are thorns on these flowers that are sure to hurt your hands. Opt for leather gloves whenever possible with big cuffs to avoid getting pricked on your wrist.
Kneeling Pads
Some people like the large 8”x15” water-resistant pads with handles. Other people prefer strap-on knee pads to do the trick. Knee pads can be very convenient because when you move, they move, but the one-size-fits-all cups might not fit you. In addition, you can use the handles on the pads to help push you back up again, which is convenient.
Short Garden Digging Fork
When you want to turn and loosen the soil in small patches, you will want a good-quality short fork with steel forks and a good handle to last for years to come.
Watering Wand
Watering wands are excellent tools for giving your roses a good soaking. You will want to have a model that has a quick shutoff valve on the wand itself and a quick release to fit in the end of the hose. You can spend the money on this tool by getting one with brass fittings instead of a plastic fitting. These will last longer.
Garden Rake
Rakes with strong, steel teeth can be great for leveling and smoothing out beds. Again, make sure you get one with a strong handle and tines for years of use.
