Rose Gardening Care Tips - Early Autumn
If it is September or October, your rose will be the happiest it’s been all year. September and October are the two best months for a rose and their finest hours, usually. If you have been careful and taken great care of your roses, you will see your roses at their finest, full of color, big blooms and a wonderful appearance overall.
Just because your roses are looking great, however, doesn’t mean you are off the hook as far as plenty of work is concerned. You can start planning and preparing now for the upcoming winter months in order to make sure your roses stay looking healthy and great.
Your bushes will work hard and the rewards for all of your hard work with them will be the gorgeous blooms that appear in your garden. You will need to continually water them to ensure they have all the nutrients they need. Water deeply and as often as necessary in order to keep your plants strong. Be sure to water them at their roots in order to prevent mildew and diseases from attacking your rose plants. Don’t water too much either, or else you will literally drown your plant’s roots.
Make sure you apply plenty of fertilizer to make sure that your plants stay strong and healthy with all of the nutrients they need. You will need to fertilize until the end of September. Look into the variety of commercially available fertilizers that specialize in boosting the bloom of your roses, including their size. You will see these fertilizers in your nursery or online and you can look into applying them to your plants. These fertilizers will have a big number of the middle of their formulation on the outside of the fertilizer bottle. No matter what, though, stop fertilizing your plants at the end of October so that your bushes can start the healthy journey into hibernation and rest.
Before October, your roses are still under threat of mildew, Blackspot and other diseases. For this reason, you will need to continue your spraying program to fight these diseases well into the end of October for the safety of your plants.
Cut roses if you want to make bouquets with your roses at the end of October. You can make these bouquets without hurting the bush. If you want to let rose hips form, you can remove the petals of the spent roses.
The end of October, beginning of November is a great time to start planning for your garden next year. You can go online or travel to the nursery to get ready for the winter. Order your new roses early to plan your garden better and make the best selections as far as color and size that are available for your space outside. You can ask the rose growers when the best time will be to ship your new plants and bushes depending on your climate zone and when you should plant these new bulbs or plants.
