Rose Gardening – How to Choose the Right Rose Type
There are so many different types of roses that you can put in your garden. How will you know which ones are the right ones for you? The decisions might seem difficult, taking all the fun out of getting a new rose garden. To make the overall decision-making process easier, there are some factors you can consider before choosing your roses.
Color
Do you know which colors you prefer for your garden? How will different colors affect your garden in different ways? You can look at your neighbors’ gardens, nurseries and different catalogs to see which colors you prefer for your future rose garden. Colors might not seem very significant, but you will want to look at the other plants and flowers that are already in your garden. Will the colors blend or will they clash? The right color scheme can make a big difference to some gardeners, while it doesn’t bother other people at all.
Size
The size rose plants that you buy is also very important. After all, you don’t want your roses being overcrowded or overtaking other plans in your garden. You will need to consider the height of the rose plant at its full growth. Some roses grow fifteen feet while others are only 4 feet tall. The size of the roses will vary significantly and can make a big impact in your garden. Make sure you get the right height and size for your garden and personal preferences.
Measure the size of your garden in order to better choose which size rose plant will work for you. Roses will need a lot of room to grow and be healthy, needing a lot of exposure to air in general. They don’t do well cowering under another bush. If you have a smaller space, miniature roses might be a better idea for your garden since they do not take up much space, are easy to plant and easy to care for.
Climate
The height and color are important factors, but where you live and your climate zone is also essential when picking out roses. You will want your roses to stay healthy and mature, so they will need to fit in with your climate zone. If you live in an area with a lot of snow, you will want to choose roses that are hardier in the colder months in order to have a greater chance of success.
Maintenance
How much do you have to maintain and watch over your new roses? If you live in the garden, your choices will be a lot different than a low-maintenance garden type. You can find beautiful roses that are both high and low maintenance to best suit your needs. You can find “Modern Roses” that are gorgeous, but require a lot of work, while “Old Garden Roses” do not have as many problems with diseases and require less maintenance.
You can also find “shrub roses” that do not have a strong scent and are virtually disease-resistant. Find the style that fits your lifestyle for the most success and best results.
