Rose Trees Care Tips, Appearance and Characteristics

If you want to add an element of elegance, beauty and bright blooms to your home, you should think about adding rose trees to your home. You will immediately love the look of rose trees.

Also known as Rose Standards, Rose Trees will differ in a myriad of ways. They are also very different from rose plants or rose shrubs in that they are cultivated to look like a tree. You will notice that the rose tree has a long cane that is about 32 – 36” in length. It will not have any foliage on it, but an explosion of flowers will be on top. The tree itself is two grafts together, the one at the central cane to support the hybrid tree, grandiflora or floribunda and then the one that is at the root of the tree.

If you have a miniature rose tree, it will be created in a similar manner, but the central cane itself will only be 24 inches tall. The end result of the rose, whether a regular or miniature, will be that you see a unique rose style that has a lollipop on the end.

The central cane will have to be staked in such a way that the cane can hold up the weight of the flowers on top. Staking is crucial here. Staking is very important if you live in an area that prone to high winds. In addition, sun is very troublesome for these plants. The central cane part of the rose plant will be prone to sun scalding.

If it’s hard to protect the tree from sun scalding in the summer months, it is particularly hard to protect it from the winter. With regular roses, you can use hilling to protect the roses in the cold months. With rose trees, you will need to build the mulch all the way up the cane and in order to do that, you must either relocate the tree or engineer a container made of wire to surround the cane that will itself be filled with mulch.

In addition to saving the tree during the winter months, you will want to be sure to prune the rose bush into a shape you prefer. Never mess with the central cane. The flowering top part is the only portion that you should be concerned about. If you have not pruned your roses properly, they will be more prone to disease or could cause an uneven distribution that will break the steams.

There is a wide variety of rose trees on the market. The Double Decker rose produces two layers of flowers – one on top and one on the bottom. The Weeping tree is another option, where you can see arched roses that will go overflow over the tree as the roses cascade towards the ground with large, beautiful blooms.

When your rose tree is in full bloom and established, you will be graced with one of the prettiest garden treats possible. With height and color, they will be a great addition to your landscape.
