Shrub Rose Care Tips, Appearance and Characteristics

The Shrub Rose has a name that is somewhat misleading for a rose. After all, every rose is basically a shrub. Many of the shrub rose varieties include hybrids, modern roses, old garden roses and even some miniature roses. Shrub is a characteristic of the rose plant, which in general looks like a bush. The Shrub Roses are a great colorful addition to your garden, no matter where you place them.

Shrub Roses are a great choice for a privacy border or screen on your property. You can use these great roses in a variety of ways. They come in a large number of colors and don’t have a strong scent so you can plant them in a variety of places. The most popular colors for these roses are pink, white, red and yellow.

Shrub Roses can be planted almost anywhere, which is a unique feature of these plants. They are “plant-friendly” and can mingle with other flowers without problems. In addition, they last well in the wintertime and they are very tolerant against diseases. You can maintain them quite easily, although they do grow large. A fully-grown, established Shrub Rose can grow as large as six feet tall! They can be trained to grow like a hedge for aesthetic purposes.

Modern shrubs are smaller in size and several different varieties have enjoyed some popularity lately, including the Ground Covers like Cliffs of Dover, Flower Carpet and the Jeepers Creepers. If you have an uneven lawn, these flowers are a great choice, or hang them in a basket or container for a beautiful look.

If you buy a shrub from the nursery, make sure that you dig a hole that is double the width and length of the pot that contains your new plant. Cut the plastic pot away from the rose carefully so as to disturb the rose as little as possible. After you put the flower in the hole, you will want to fill the hole with loose soil and soak it with water right away. Be sure to put this plant in a sunny spot since these plants will need at least 8 hours of sunlight.

Shrub Roses don’t need much maintenance, which is great news for many homeowners, but the soil should always be moist. If you live in a dry climate, make sure that your rose receives plenty of sun and water at least twice a week. You will want to also fertilize your roses in the spring and fall with organic fertilizers to get a great look. You won’t need to prune your roses very frequently since these roses are essentially self-cleaners. They will release their own dead foliage and create their own neat appearance. You can even find ones that are ‘ever-blooming’ for a gorgeous look.

Consider planting Shrub Roses in your garden or lawn. You will love the look of a bright rose in your yard with minimum maintenance. You can get a great look and addition for your garden when you choose a Shrub Rose today!
