Apartment and Condo Security Techniques
Security wise, living in an apartment or condominium has some advantages and disadvantages.
The responsibility of security is usually handled, in large part, by management, when speaking of apartment complexes. Even if they don’t provide dedicated security personnel, there are usually steps they take to keep the property secure. This is a benefit to them as well, since the more secure their complex is, the more people will want to live there.
Even though most do the best they can, due to the number of units, they can’t realistically see to the total security of each one. They are generally more focused on the security of the complex as a whole, rather than each individual apartment or condo.
Unfortunately, this means that the main responsibility for each individual unit falls to whoever is occupying it at the time. There are, however, a number of affordable and effective steps you can take to give yourself that added security.
Of course, the first thing you can do is make use of all door and window locks. Many complexes have rules against installing individual alarm systems, but you can make sure you have good locks and utilize window bars and so forth. Although this can be relatively inexpensive, management will sometimes share the cost. Even if you have to foot the bill
yourself, you can’t really put a price tag on your personal safety and security.
Your fellow tenants can help provide an extra measure of security as well. Apartments and condos can easily develop their own versions of a neighborhood watch program. This method is probably more effective in this setting than it would be in a traditional neighborhood. These areas are often more condensed and densely populated. Also, there will rarely be a time when no one is around.
Common sense can go a long way in providing security as well. Never allow a stranger to come through the gate, no matter what excuse they give you. If possible, avoid walking in poorly lit parking lots or garages alone. Many people, especially women, carry pepper spray to protect themselves in this situation. It’s also a good idea to be familiar with the area, including any possible ambush points.
Just because a person shows up at the gate claiming to be affiliated with some type of business, doesn’t mean they are. If you’re not familiar with the person or the company they represent, do not let them enter. Always require them to provide identification if you are unsure. They may have even gone as far as to disguise their vehicle, but they probably won’t be expecting you to ask for ID.
Make security one of your deciding factors when shopping for an apartment or condo. Take your time until you find one that satisfies your security needs. If security isn’t up to par when you move in, you’ll probably have a hard time convincing the owner to upgrade later on. You may, however try to make it a condition of purchase before hand. Many people do not realize what an important factor security is when looking for a place to live.
