Home Security Driveway Alarm Systems
Many large, estate style homes are equipped with gated driveways that have intercom systems. In some cases, these sprawling mansions aren’t the only homes that have long, winding driveways that aren’t visible from the house. Everyone should be secure in knowing who is approaching or entering their driveway.
One way to achieve this is with driveway alarms.
These systems use infrared sensors placed at various locations on the property. If one of these sensors is tripped, it transmits a signal to a receiver inside the house. There are a few different variations in these systems. In any case, a ‘light wire’ is tripped whenever something
interrupts the light beam. Some other versions use underground pressure sensors or magnetic types that will activate for large metal objects like vehicles.
All of these systems are designed to allow you to know when someone is on the property before they reach the house. These systems will alert you to visitors and deliveries and things of that nature as well. There are many benefits to this type of system, in addition to intruder
detection.
In some cases, you will need to be aware of someone approaching the house on foot. This is why many of these systems include motion detectors. This will alert you to someone’s presence even if they do not trip the ‘light wires’. A wide area can be covered by these types of sensors, usually anywhere from 800-1200 feet.
Just like any other type of technology, you get what you pay for. Some of the lower end systems may not come equipped with an intercom. Even though you will be alerted to someone’s presence, you won’t be able to tell who it is or why they are there.
Security cameras are a nice addition to these systems as well. They are much more affordable today than they used to be. The intercom system is nice, but the camera will give added security by allowing you to visually verify your visitors. The footage from these cameras is usually admissible as evidence in court as well.
Some of these systems provide other useful options as well. They can be set up to do things like open the garage door, turn the lights on, or unlock the front door when you arrive home.
Another nice option to have is a backup battery unit, that allows the system to remain fully operational during power outages. This option is invaluable in the event that an intruder is able to cut the wires to your system.
The list of options and added features is quite extensive, such as waterproof transmitters, volume control, computer capabilities and do-it-yourself installation. Before purchasing a system, find out about it’s ability to determine false alarms, such as children playing and dogs
running by. A good system should be able to tell the difference between those and a genuine threat.
No matter what your budget, you should be able to find the system with the appropriate options to fit your needs.
