Home Security - Video Surveillance Systems
Obviously, the main objective of any intruder is to get in and out of the house without being seen. As well as accomplishing whatever they broke in for, they also want to leave as little physical evidence behind as possible. Video surveillance systems can be useful for both of these.
When a would-be intruder sees a set of cameras on your home, this tells them that you have taken these – and probably more – steps to secure your home. This will likely send them in search of an easier target.
Video cameras can be positioned outside and inside the home to let you see what's going on as it happens. This allows you to visually observe activity and determine if there is a threat. These systems are also capable of recording videos and sound for later playback. If an intruder goes through with his plans, despite the camera, this video footage is often allowed as evidence in court. Security camera videos have led to the convictions of numerous criminals.
Covert and overt are the two main types of video systems. This simply means, hidden and in plain view. As previously stated, the overt type will sometimes stop break-ins before they happen. There are a couple of advantages to the covert type as well. The first is obviously the video and recording capabilities, and the second is discussed below.
Some burglaries are inside jobs that are carried out by people you are familiar with. Gardeners, babysitters, housekeepers or anyone else you grant access to your property is capable of such things. Although it is the exception rather than the rule, it does happen.
Covert systems can be a deterrent just like overt types, even though you can't see them. If you make it known that the cameras are there, but not the exact locations, a potential thief might just leave everything alone.
Just like anything else, these systems vary in complexity and price. Some systems are quite simple and are similar to common camcorders. They will, however, allow you to monitor and record activity from a remote location. You could monitor it yourself in your home or office, or have an outside security company handle it for you.
More advanced systems allow you to integrate your PC to take advantage of added features. These features include the ability to track movement and sound, as well as increase recording capabilities. It also adds to the programming and timing abilities.
You may not want the system to be functional at certain times, such as during the day when you are home. These newer systems allow you to program the unit to turn itself back on during times when it is needed. This way you don't have to worry about forgetting. A signal could be sent when you open or close the front door to turn it off and on, for example.
Other features include motion sensors that will power up the system when something is detected.
Modern technology has brought home security to higher levels than ever before. There are systems available with numerous features to fit almost any budget. Everyone's specific needs are different and should be taken into consideration when shopping for a system. Whatever amount of money you decide to spend on one will be well worth it compared to the potential loss you could experience without one. There's no better time than right now to start thinking about security.
