Home Security - Neighborhood Watch Programs
A great way to enhance the security of your home, as well as that of those around you, is to get involved in a neighborhood watch program.
Obviously, it's not possible for anyone to be home all the time. There are several reasons that we must regularly go out, such as work, vacation, shopping and other errands. Fortunately, though, not everyone that lives near you is on the same schedule. Someone is usually home at all times.
Unfortunately, the neighborhood setting has evolved into something less personal than it once was. Many people today do not even know their neighbors. In some cases, conversations never progress further than a polite 'hello'. This causes people to only be concerned about their own safety, rather than that of the neighborhood as a whole.
Take some time to get to know those around you. Pass out flyers and encourage your neighbors to attend a meeting to discuss your shared security concerns. Even though people may disagree on many things, home security is usually not one of them.
You'll always have some that do not wish to participate, but even they will benefit from such a program. It only takes one person to keep a watchful eye on an entire neighborhood in some cases. If you're paying attention, it's not hard to spot unusual or suspicious behavior and contact the authorities.
More participants give you the added advantage of overlapping zones of protection. Obviously, the more eyes you have watching the neighborhood, the better the chances are that the threat will be thwarted quickly. Try to increase participation by explaining the benefits to all.
There have been studies that show significant decreases in crime rates for areas that use neighborhood watch programs. Another good idea is to advertise the fact that the system exists in your neighborhood. If a potential intruder sees signs posted to that effect, he may just decide not to take the chance, and go elsewhere.
Your local police department or Sheriff's office can give you some information to get you started. They will help you to put together a more organized effort than you could on your own. These agencies should be more than willing to assist you since it will be benefiting them as well. It makes their jobs easier and lets them know that when the time comes, they will have your full cooperation. Many people complain about crime , but don't try to do anything about it.
Make the children in your neighborhood aware of what's going on. A seven year old child is perfectly capable of recognizing when something, or someone, is out of place. Since the days of the door-to-door salesman are about gone, it should be fairly easy for kids to determine if someone is roaming around that doesn't belong.
Teach the children to immediately notify an older child or adult if they see someone that looks suspicious. Many times it turns out that no threat is present, but it only takes once. No one wants their children to live in fear, but it would be foolish not to educate them of the dangers that exist.
A neighborhood watch program is one of the simplest and most inexpensive steps you can take to enhance home security. Get started today, and everyone will sleep easier at night.
