Home Security Weapons Ownership, Pros and Cons

One area of personal, as well as home security, that is sure to be a hot topic of debate, is the ownership and use of firearms. This has been a source of controversy for decades, and it isn't likely to be cleared up anytime soon.

Each side has plenty of statistics to defend their arguments. The pro-gun people insist that it only increases your safety, while the other side argues that simply owning a gun makes you less safe. We're not here to try to settle this debate, but rather to present some pros and cons, so that you can make up your own mind.

Both sides of this debate are, at least, partly correct. Depending on the training and experience of the owner, as well as how the weapon is stored, it could prove either side correct. There are many other factors to consider as well, including who else lives in the house and others.

The fact that you have a gun will not make you safer. A circumstance could arise that allows the gun to be taken and turned against you. Acquiring the proper training and hours of practice can help to eliminate this possibility, but if the situation allows, it could still happen. Buying a gun and stashing it away somewhere without taking the time to become comfortable with it could be more dangerous than not having one.

State and local laws and regulations also need to be taken into consideration before deciding that a gun is the option for you. Some areas have outlawed gun ownership altogether. Many other areas require special licenses and registration. No matter where you are, should you ever actually use your firearm, you will be required to justify your actions. Sometimes, just pointing your gun at someone without pulling the trigger can land you in legal trouble, even if your intention was only to protect yourself or your family.

When children are in the home, this issue really heats up. Many would argue that it's irresponsible to keep firearms in a home with children, even though, in some areas, young children can become qualified to use them. Many children today, even as old as 15, can't be expected to safely handle a firearm, even for target shooting.

The way society has evolved over the last 100 years, it isn't necessary for children to go out and hunt for food with their fathers the way it was back then. The need to responsibly learn to handle a gun just isn't there anymore. That means that physically, as well as mentally, children just are not as well suited for this as they once were.

Some argue in favor of this trend as a sign that society is progressing toward something more civilized. The other side will put forth that because of this, it's apparent that we've lost part of our former selves, thus forfeiting some of our identity.

It's the responsibility of each individual to listen to both sides of this argument and make the most informed decision that they can. Hopefully, some of these pros and cons will help you to do just that.
